Go to the OE homepage, download the 5.95.5 im.gz, gunzip the img.gz and dd the img to an usb stick (the raw device), after that boot the usb stick and write "live" at the start.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

@fritsch: hate to bother you guys, but have you had a chance to take a look at this again? I'm seeing problems with practically every file I try to play now.

Nope - currently having other priorities - which one is your trac bug number?

Welp, I finally got a disk error message when booting the machine the other day. Looks like that was the problem, after all. Thanks anyway for all the help!
