with a few hundred folders/files in one directory, it can take quite some time to navigate down to the right place.

i am used to using mobile phone text entry/phonebook searching, and wonder if this would be a good solution here?

it would be nice to have a short-cut jump to certain letter, a bit like text entry on mobile phones. i.e pressing "7" on the remote four times would jump down to the first folder with 's' etc.

3=def
4=ghi
5=jkl
6=mno
7=pqrs
8=tuv
9=wxyz

how about it could do what mame does: i.e. hold down a button to enter quick mode, at which point a small osd is displayed that has the letter 'a'. holding up/down changes this to b,c,d etc and releasing the quick-mode-enter-key jumps you to that letter.
just a thought.
