is it possible to add an option to directly open the subtitle selection list via a remote button instead of using the video menu? For audio tracks would that be great as well.

Not yet, but you can rotate between subtitle and audio tracks with a keypress. Depending on how many tracks you have, that may or may not be practical.

Are there any plans to implement this feature soon? In my limited understanding, there only has to be some direct reference to the language or subtitle window for the key-mapping. Or are these changes extensive?

I use an Android TV and the remote has Audio and CC buttons. The TV's default app, which is pretty bare bones, lets you select the audio and subtitle tracks with these buttons.

Be great to do the same with Kodi.
