Finally found a way to view EXTERNAL SUBS in DVD!(Ripped DVD only!)

I stumbled upon this the other day and it worked!

Maybe it's old news to some, but hey i thought i'd post this anyway.

Just get the VOB files you want to use, get an SRT - Subtitle file or whatever works for you and of course XBMC.

Download a tool called MKVToolnix (MKV is NOT a codec! but a container in which you can store your DVD VOB files.) XBMC can read these files without any problem at all!

Install and run the program called MKVmergegui

Once in the dialog screen select->add and hit the tab below in the search dialog to set to all files or VOB (Whatever you like in your MKV container)

Once you've added your VOB file, you can click on Append to link to the next VOB file (VTS_01_1.VOB+VTS_02_VOB) No problemo!

Once you did that highlight the videostream in the (tracks) dialog below.

The hit the FORMAT SPECIFIC options tab, and set the correct framerate (FPS=for instance 23.976) and set the aspect ratio 16/9 - 4/3 which are 16:9 widescreen and 4:3 normal. (You can choose other ratio's too)

Then hit the add button again and browse to your subtitle file, add it to the project (again you can select and change values in the dialog box below)

Now just hit Start muxing and after a short while you have your DVD with external subs in it! And the best thing is that you can add as many subs as you like, as many audio tracks as you like.

Now go and have fun.

Muxing does not take long at all depending on your system! It's way way faster then encoding.

Burn as DATA DVD or just STREAM.....

=========================================

To the XBMC team, is it possible to add a specific code to DVD player which tells DVD player that the DVD is actually an MKV file. That way you could easily implement external subs........

Maybe it's impossible but just a suggestion from a complete a technical person.

Remember this is not re-encoding so it does not affect quality!

This thread title is missleading. You arn't viewing external subs on a DVD. You are ripping MPEG-2 video from a DVD, and placing it into an MKV container with subs, like the subtitled content it already does play. You've basicly discovered that it supports subs when playing back MKV contained files, which everyone already knew. You're just using MPEG-2 instead of MPEG-4 which is more commonly used in MKV.

Thumbs Up
Look you don't have to add the subs!

You can actually host the subs EXTERNALLY, and open them via smb share in
the AS screen! Yes even in a rar file.....

So just mux into MKV container without subs, and open the movie while hosting
the subs separately!

No degrade in quality and DVD with external subs!
