HOW-TO delete folders on SMB/Samba shares
#1
Issue: When deleting a folder from a SMB/ Samba Share, the files inside the folder are removed, however the folder its self remains.

Cause: A hidden file that is created by Windows called 'thumbs.db'. Due to the fact that it is hidden, XBMC fails to delete the file while in music, video or picture mode. Thumbs.db is a system file generated automatically by Windows XP when you view the contents of a folder in “Thumbnail” or “Filmstrip” view. Thumbs.db contains a copy of each of the tiny preview images generated for image files in that folder so that they load up quickly the next time you browse that folder. Thumbs.db also stores your settings with regard to thumbnail and filmstrip view.

Solution: All you have to do is disable them from being created in WindowsXP. Also makesure you search the folders you are sharing for "hidden" thumbs.db and delete them.

To Disable Thumbs.db from being create follow these steps:

  1. Open a folder (or the specific folder you want to change).
  2. Select "Folder Options" from the View menu.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Check the "Do not cache thumbnails" option (see below).
  5. Click "OK" to apply the change and close the window (or click "Appy to All Folders" to make the change systemwide).
