I have LXBMC installed on an old P4 2.8ghz with 768 Megs of RAM, and a Quattro NVS280 video card. All videos, menus, etc work fine. Whenever I try to run a 720p MKV file, the screen goes white, but I do get sound. I am also able to access info screens and see them fine. The clip plays fine with mplayer outside of XBMC. Any ideas?

I was reading other users experiences with even older video cards. What I understood is that there was no hardware acceleration, and that the video cards were just drawing the GUI. Others have reported being able to watch 720p with no issues on cards that don't support the OpenGL2. If I am mistaken, let me know.

According to Newegg the 5200 only supports OpenGL 1.4, is this corrected with drivers?

it's not so much about drivers as about what the hw supports... opengl is extremely modular and can expose newer features through extensions even in older api versions

The link to the 5200 is for the GO model. The desktop model only supports 1.4 I will post logs when I get home. Has anyone else has any luck with 720p content with OpenGl 1.3 or 1.4 hardware?

Aha, nice catch. I figured that any card supporting DX9 (although the geforce5's support is pretty tentative) would do OGl2.0.
Newegg has 6200 PCI cards available for like $50. Grab one of those instead.

I have an AGP slot. I actually got ahold of a ATI FireGL x3. THis definatly supports everything thats needed, just a matter of getting the drivers going. Do you guys think this is a good idea?

The ATI linux drivers are pretty crappy. If you have a choice, cancel the order and go nvidia. If you got a great deal or it was free then sure, give it a shot.
