I have a lot of my videos in X.264 MKV format. How do I disable subtitles altogether? I notice they automatically appear when I play the movie file but I don't know how to disable them as I don't want them appearing.

Here you go: http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Videos#Subtitles
You can get into the OSD by hitting the "m" key during video play. |

"There is no global ON/OFF setting for subtitles, as this setting is stored on a per-video basis, but you can quickly set the setting on all videos by manually changing it using the OSD, then hitting "Set as default for all movies".
Note that this will save *all* settings from this page as the default for all movies, not just the subtitle option. " Subtitles are a huge boon for many people, but it's a shame there's no global on/off setting without affecting other parameters for all files. Does this cause issues in practice? It might be quicker to quickly turn them off during playback than have to alter several other parameters if other 'defaults' are not suitable.
