[LINUX] LinuxMCE could use XBMC's skinning engine as their framework?
#1
Question
Hey guys, I know the traditional standpoint of XBMC is that it's a media center, but I thought I'd put this out there to see how people feel about it. I've been using LinuxMCE for a few months now, getting a rig running with it and working towards the more advanced things you can do with it. I have to say though, after being an XBMC user for several years, nobody else holds a candle to the media presentation of XBMC, it is hands down the absolute best. That said, I've always found myself wanting my media center to do a lot more and LinuxMCE effectively does that, now when I turn on my TV my lights will automatically dim down, and shades will close, I can use my cell phone as a remote so no more fumbling around in the dark, it detects my presence in the room, etc. The thing that is killing me though is that it is not XBMC. So my feature request is for merging LMCE and XBMC to make the ultimate media center. MythTV is decent, but let's face it, they've been around forever and really haven't changed that much or done anything innovative lately, the best thing I can say for that project is that it's definitely gotten easier to install and setup. I'd love to see great developers working towards a common goal uniting through different projects.

JM: Any chance you could drop by the LMCE forums and post some wisdom on a skinning engine, what they've got currently only a handful of people understand and I was able to use XBMC's skinning engine to do some incredible things with very little research time, just a lot of playing and tweaking. My username used to be los93sol on here, you probably remember me from what I did with the MC360 skin.

Hi RetroS4.

If the LMCE guys want to collaborate on anything then I'm happy to discuss the possibility of them using our skinning engine or whatever.

Feel free to get them to contact me directly.

Cheers,
Jonathan

there's nothing to prevent you from doing this with xbmc on linux. another daemon could handle the home automation piece. and conceivably, xbmc could interface with it via pytthon.

Correct, there is already a python script for X10 home automation control, and many previous topic threads with discussions regarding LinuxMCE:
