As stated here, Kodi does not know about surnames.
Movie databases do not separate forename and surname, so surnames are not immediately distinguishable.

However, sorting entries and displaying them by surname (directors etc.) would be quite an improvement.

To illustrate, it's easy for us to remember first names like those of
- Bergman (Ingmar);
- Fellini (Federico);
- Huston (John).
But it's not so easy to remember such ones like
- Ozu (Yasujirō);
- Makhmalbaf (Mohsen);
- Teshigahara (Hiroshi).
