0.1.7, vertical blank sync, and the spinning beach ball of death

Has anyone noticed when trying to change the settings for vertical blank sync, that it completely crashes the PC?

My iMac 24"(late 2007) completely dumps when just selecting any setting. I cannot provide a dump as the PC is rendered useless, and only a hard reset will bring it back.

Completely fresh install of 0.1.7.

Also shoutcast still dumps after donwloading then buffering streams...

Just tried changing on the mini with 0.1.6 and it works fine.

Going to try 0.1.6 again on the iMac and see what happens.

Ok, must be something specific to the iMac hardware, perhaps the 2600HD vid card?

0.1.6 does the same, completely locks up the PC.

Any other place I can check for any type of log that may be saved before the PC dumps?

Ouch, nasty problem.

The Shoutcast problem is a known issue.

Just to clarify, are you in full-screen mode? If so, can you try windowed mode and see if the entire Mac is hanging, or just XBMC? If not, and the entire machine hangs, that's a serious problem, and sounds like a driver issue.

The log should be in /var/tmp/xbmc.log after you reboot.

Thanks, and I'm sorry to hear about your trouble.

Hi elan,

it originally hung in windowed(auto) mode immediately after a clean install.
It also hung in fullscreen after I tried it again.

I will try it again now and then pastebin the log....

Ok, HERE is xbmc.log

This is with screen setting on auto, and just merely clicking the arrow up/down to select a different v sync mode.

There is no question it locks up the whole machine, nothing will function.

I let it go like that for approx. 20 minutes yesterday, only for a minute today.

The only way to recover was hard reset(hold power button till machine powered off, then power button again to boot).

Thanks for the log! My guess is that it's a driver issue with the ATI video. My wife has the same model iMac (20"), but she'll kick my ass if I start messing with it. I may have similar video hardware in house shortly, so I'll see if I can reproduce here.

Have you updated the firmware for the video card?

Hi elan,

Everything is up to date as far as anything Apple has released.
I have installed the leopard graphics update of a month or so ago.
Other than that, Apple hasn't offered anything for vid card.

The good news is that you don't have to mess with that setting. It defaults to always enabled, and I don't know of any good reasons to turn it off, unless you like watching tearing video.

Ya, I more or less found it by accident. I was just experimenting with settings and noticed that happened.

It reminds me of:

A: "Doctor, it hurts when I do X"
Doctor: "Don't do X!"

LOL!

Well needless to say, I havent done it since.
I dont use XBMC as much on the iMac anymore, since I now run it on a mini.
Thought I would point it out though, as other may have had the same issue.
