SSA/ASS subtitle support should be happening soon, and is scheduled for the next milestone. The next milestone is targeted for 6 days from now. See if the next milestone resolves the issue. Also, is the ssa file muxed into the video file, or is it separate?

Ok. I checked. XBMC doesn't find external ass subtitles, and when I choose browse for subtitle in the menu, it doesn't see .ass files. A workaround would be for you to use mkvmerge from mkvtoolnix to put the tracks from the avi and the subtitle file into the same .mkv container. When this is done osxbmc 0.4.5 is able to use the subtitles. I'll post a bug about this if the behavior isn't better at the next milestone. As far as .sub subtitles, I don't tend to use them, and am not sure what needs to be done to get them to work.
