um go into options and when you choose the resolution keep scrolling until you get your 2nd displays res then hit test resolution right underneath it. that should work.

thanks. that worked, except the image doesnt fit on the screen now (the resolution is set to 1280x720, which is correct)...

This should fix you up.
Go To:
Settings > Appearance > Screen > Resolution > Then choose the "fullscreen#2" resolution.
Also,
Settings > Videos > Player > Resolution > "fullscreen #2"

i closed the app, deleted the XBMC folder in user-->library-->application support, tried the settings again and now it works
