Noggin, you had it bang on, enabled flow control and all fine.
I initially dropped the speed to 100 too, but have put this back to GB now and rebooted the Pi, still all OK. (So far...)
Thank you all again, and if you upgrade to a Pi v3B+, make sure you enable Flow Control on the port it uses!!!

I have a feeling this will bite a few people - as managed switches have dropped in price point significantly over the last 12-18 months and are likely to be more widespread.
(I don't have any unmanaged switches at home now - they've all been swapped out, as I started using VLANs to segment my home network.)
