Update Library or Scan for New Content...what's the diff?
#1
What is the difference between "Scan for new Content" and "Update Library"?

I mainly ask because I am trying to "update" my TV Show library. I often watch the shows on my HTPC and then remove them. When I browse the TV library using the xbox...all the removed shows are of course still there. I try to "Update" the library but all the removed shows are still there. Then I use the "Scan for New Content" and they are all still there. Does the DB not remove missing items on a library scan? I can understand a reason for not wanting to remove items by default (NAS offline), but maybe an option in videos/library settings to remove them if the files are missing and the share is available.

Go into your video library settings and choose "Clean Library" (easily accessible through the context menu when in your video library)

Oh, and scan for new content scans for new content of the currently selected show, update library looks for updates in the whole library if I am not mistaken.

I thought that purged the entire library...

It worked. Is there any way to run a clean automatically? I still think the option I described in the first post could be quite nice to have. Should I post it in the request thread?

Not to my knowledge, no. I have XBMC set to automatically update my library upon startup, but it doesn't update on removed items. I agree it would be nice, wouldn't hurt to post a request I guess.

Update library on startup runs the clean auto pretty sure just Update Library command does as well

When I run update library from within the library it definitely does not clean it.

Update should run a "clean":
http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Video_Librar...brary_Mode
(but why clean would remove empty series, and update not is beyond me)

But then again you can always use the hideemptyseries advancedsettings tag:

Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.

I do hide empty series. The problem is that when I update the library, it does NOT remove the shows that I have deleted from the Hard Drive..

Then it is a bug.

XBMC version and a debug log will probably help a dev tracking it down.
