i would say yes as there a few places to download subtitles. typically r1 gets movies fastest. this means other regions dont have to wait for the dvd to be released and can use the r1 disc.

and i see your point about dvd's. how do can we auto detect an alternate external subtitle? in this case, i think just providing the ability to manually browse for external subtitles would be sufficient.

hi there,

does anybody know how to use .srt subtitles when playing a ripped dvd (.ifo)?

i have heard that it was possible with previous versions of xbmc simply by renaming the subtitles file as video_ts.srt, but how to with the latest xbmc builds?

it is very useful when watching dvds not having subtitles in your own language.

thanks a lot and best regards,
marco

i have already posted this thread once and received no answers... it seems strange to me... isn't it a very useful feature?

thanks a lot and best regards,

yes!

many dvd releases come without english subtitles (i think it's crazy because english subs wouldn't take much space).

even though you can be fluent in eglish you know how difficult sometimes it is to catch some words or entire sentences (especially when they use slang).

with that feature we could easily find english .srt subtitles and use them.

the same would be greatly helpful for people who don't speak english and who didn't find subs in their own language in the release (there are .srt subs in many languages).

the only thing i don't understand is that i have heard that it was possible with previous builds of xbmc simply by renaming the subtitles file as video_ts.srt: can someone confirm? is it an old feature removed in newest builds?

thanks a lot and best regards,
marco

short answer.
xbmc uses two player cores, mplayer and the dvdplayer. mplayer suports external subtitles, dvdplayer does not. mplayer does not support dvd menu's, dvdplayer does. dvdplayer is the default player for video_ts stuff. you can select which player you want to use if you select video_tf.ifo and press (on the remote control that is) the title button and choose the option, play with.
dvdplayer is going to support external subtitles, but not before the next pointrelease is out. simple reason, implementing external subtitle support is not as easy as it seems.

thanks a lot for the answer darkie,

would you please explain how to use external subs with mplayer, then?

should we rename them to video_ts.srt and put them into the same dvd folder?

regards,
marco

thanks a lot for the answer darkie,

yes! yes!

sorry for the excess of enthusiasm but i was really needing that :-)

thanks to darkie's answer i realized (maybe for the rest of you it was obvious) that with the old mplayer it is possible to use subtitles while watching dvds, you just need to browse for them by entering the audio menu while playing the dvd; plus i thought mplayer disappeared from latest builds but as darkie said "you select video_tf.ifo and press (on the remote control that is) the title button and choose the option, play with"!

easy and useful!!!

we can use still use the mplayer for dvds and external subs until the feature will be implemented in dvdplayer.

thanks a lot and best regards,
marco
