Solved AMD VAAPI regression for Leia 18.5
#46
@yol I know, Tongue , I've posted on the freedesktop gitlab issue too Smile
The dreaded "fix vlc break the rest" commit was reverted in master, vaapi-bob fix works too.
However these patches were not included in 20.0.0-rc3 released today , lets hope they don't forget to include them in release )

To progress I have decided to try new mesa compilations.
First at all, as i Have a mixed mesa version (but working) on the computer, so i want not touch my installed Mint.
As I don't know if the testing under virtual machine make sense for graphics (it's emulated how?), I have decided to test latest Ubuntu Focal Fossa 2004 on Usb stick.
The kernel is 5.4.0.9 and mesa 19.3.3
First thing: The live don't reserve enough memory to upgrade, shame i had 8 Gigs … can't add oibaf ppa...
Second : ppa:team-xbmc/ppa don't work with fossa !!
Last: the snap package coming with ubuntu software is ok with install but nothing at lunch …
So still no test, if someone have a idea how to proceed ...

Thank you,

My test from yesterday fails due to low ram allocation on usb live Stick for all Ubuntu versions
The version I wanted to test is 20.1 taken from : https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ub...cs-drivers
I need to make room on a spare disk, install Ubuntu 18.04 on it, update it , + Kodi 18.5 from repo, plus Mesa from link above.
Mesa 20.0 forgot, it has makes me Kodi 18.5 to crash.
I don't think I have time to do this before saturday.
If somebody else can do it before on AMD hardware like my desktop PC and interlaced 1080i video content ..

First patch that fixes invalid surface issue has made into mesa 20.0.0 stable.
The second one that fixes vaapi-bob has not.

           version: 4.5 Mesa 20.1.0-devel (git-4d57a27 2020-02-22 bionic-oibaf-ppa)

Automatic upgrade for Kodi to 18.6.
Mint install with mesa 19.0.8 -> VAAPI broken !!!!
How to revert Kodi 18.5 ? (It's impossible with synaptic)  ?
mesa 21 still not ready for Ubuntu : https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/

There was no single change in VAAPI nor the surrounding code in 18.6 at all. Whatever you have is local breakage - once again.

And PS: Without a Debug Log this post is entirely useless.
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

No problem for a log.
I would precise that my updates for mesa are blocked for Mint to last 19.0.8 Ubuntu repo, other ways it updates to 19.2.8 that is broken, and still no Ubuntu updates see my previous post and history since the beginning.
The only thing that Mint has done is update for Leia to 18.6 because i haven't blocked it.

No more possibility to setup 1 VAAPI, all is software decode, boths cpu rises to 70% peek, that's why i asked to revert only Kodi to 18.5 (or other way that solve the issue)

You need to write more precise in general!

Your post says:
Quote:Mint install with mesa 19.0.8 -> VAAPI broken !!!!

Suggesting with that, that 18.6 is broken but 18.5 works. If you do that by intention, you are slowly but surely going on my nerves ...

I've found the issue!! A NEW AMD bug !!! not related to mesa:

I had a look in dmesg and found the message : failed initializing UVD (-1).
This is related to linux-firmware that (was) at automatic update.
I revert from 1.173.15 to 1.173 and now new kodi 18.6 works with vaapi.
At now, I have blocked updates for mesa (until it is not corrected at Ubuntu's repo) and linux-firmware.

Shame on AMD and there POOR legacy and middle old graphics cards.

Did you fully cold power cycle your machine after the linux-firmware upgrade? Some hardware can't handle a firmware update without a cold power cycle. For one of my Intel Bluetooth cards, I have to power the machine off and unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in to get it to take a new firmware. Try upgrading the firmware and doing that.
