Is there a Live TV How-to ?
#1
Hello everybody,
I bought an Android Nvidia Shield Tv a while ago. I got it primarily in order to retrieve home videos. I am putting a DVD films collection on a NAS and Kodi makes a wonderfull task reading the iso files on my NAS across the home network.
I thought I could use  the Molotov TV app to watch TV and store films and other videos displayed on live TV sometimes. This works fine, but there are several problems. First, Molotov TV can store TV films but it charges you for that (4,99€ a month for 150h of storage). second, it is not possible to retrieve those recordings and store them on my NAS if I want to look at them later. It is stored somewhere in the Molotov cloud and it is not available, except for displaying it.
Il have read that Kodi can help me to overcome these issues but that there could be legal problems. I do not want to do illegal things at all. If I must pay to display some channels i will pay. But I wish to use my personal right of a free private copy.
Can Kodi help me and is there a "how to" in order to extract the correct solution ?

I would read this if you want to watch broadcast TV in Kodi legally

For internet based services that are legal I would start here
https://kodi.tv/addons

Thank you Jools for answer. This gives me some hints about the problem.

The fist link explains quite clearly (if I understand correctly) that there is no solution which can be implemented directly on the Nvidia Shield, because it is an Android device, and at present there is no Android application (backend) which can both connect to the TV signals (as Molotov TV does) and have an APi to Kodi. The text explains also that the "backend" can be installed on another computer and talk with Kodi through the home network. I noted that there seems to exist interfaces between Windows Media Center and Kodi (my main computer is a Windows PC) and also between Synology computers and Kodi (my NAS is a synology one). Am I correct ?
Could someone give me some more stuff concerning those last solutions ?

The second link suggests to use an IPTV Kodi addon. But I do not want to step into illegal issues. I would need to know how to manage to implement an IPTV addon without using illegal means to view and record Live TV. Has anyone been in the same situation where I am ?

Kodi has an IPTV simple client in the Kodi repo, but I doubt it would be compatible

In the end it sounds like your after some addon that will log in and open the web streams for the service (like the Netflix or Amazon) with the options to save them.

I'm not going to judge the legality of that but suggest you look at the Video Addons subforum

I would tell it differently. I was hopping that some Kodi addon would act as the application Molotov TV does, that is displaying live TV and offering different packages, some free and some with legal payment, but with a different recording policy. It turns out that on Android devices such a Kodi addon does not exist.
Thank you for help. I learnt a lot of things.

You can run the tvheadend backend on the nvidia shield.

Edit - and the Hdhomerun DVR and Channels DVR backends too.

Thank you Tredman for answer.  I do not know what tvheadend is, nor Hdhomerun DVR nor Channels DVR backends, but a few googling suggested me that it is promising. Anygood  link so that i can learn more about these ?
