v18 What's the right NFS server configuration?
#1
Hi there folks,

Problem: I can't connect to my NFS server
OS: macOS 10.15.7
Kodi: 18.9.0

Trying to configure my first NFS server for Kodi. I've never configured a server before so I have surely made some mistake.  I have ensured it is up and running by accessing it from another computer.
I have followed all the information in Kodi's official NFS Mac OS X setup guide (https://kodi.wiki/view/NFS). Unfortunately, it provides some examples of different NFS configurations but does not indicate which is the correct one. I'm using NFS Manager but I can use Terminal aswell if you have any instructions.

What are the requirements/conditions?

I found a solution. This thread can be closed.

Perhaps others can also benefit from your solution, whatever it is?

Sure. Well, I still don't quite know how to set up an NFS server which is only available to my network, for macOS Catalina. It's easy to make one which is available for the entire internet, but specifying the local IPV4 network was just mission impossible. I followed every guide and help document I could find for NFS Manager, the app I used, but to no avail. So if anyone has something helpful to say there, I'd be grateful. There's after all a comprehensive guide document on the Kodi wiki for using NFS but not how to actually set it up.

What I did learn however regarding an NFS setup was that I had entered the credentials incorrectly in Kodi, especially regarding the exact folder pathway. Before you bully me, remember there's no official Kodi guidance on filling out NFS server details and it can vary from the typical SMB server setup. For SMB you may enter "192.168.xx.xxx" + "FolderName" directly, or the full path, or just the IP address without folder path; for NFS you have to enter the full path and nothing else, which is also a bit different to enter in Catalina compared to Windows and earlier versions of macOS, ie: "IP" + "Volume/Disk/Folder". So what I did was:

"Add network location"...
"Protocol" = "Network File System"
"Server address" = "192.168.xx.xxx"
"Remote path" = "Volumes/MountDrive/Folder"
The resultant address will be: "nfs://192.168.xx.xxx/Volumes/MountDrive/Folder"

This address notably doesn't look like standard nfs-addresses which tend to have : after the IP address, like so: "nfs://192.168.xx.xxx:/Volumes/etc". This was a crucial insight into using Kodi with Jellyfin through the add-on, as you need two matching nfs-addresses (which is not written anywhere in the official documentation). This is not the case with SMB; for SMB servers (on macOS Catalina, once again) you may just enter the IP in Kodi, skip the folder pathway completely, but enter the specific SMB folder pathways in Jellyfin.

So that's it.

If anyone wants to help out, I need help here: https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=359309 - 4k vids playing perfectly in VLC but choppily in Kodi. What are the optimal settings?
