Dear sirs and ladies!

Is it possible to build a Kodi machine playing 4k discs . Capable of upscaling (as good as sony) ?

What hardware should one use ?

If it's all about upscaling, why would we reinvent the wheel?
Use the TVs' upscaling, they are usually better all-round.

Any particular reason why you posted this in the Linux section?

Most people rip their optical media to files before playing in Kodi - it's quieter (no spinning optical disc noise) and means Kodi doesn't have to incorporate optical disc playback code that may be illegal in your territory (as it breaks encryption on the disc).

AIUI there are ways of incorporating Blu-ray Disc playback in Kodi - but not sure about UHD Blu-rays.

As for upscaling - TV upscaling is usually better than Kodi hardware (particularly low cost ARM stuff) - which is why whitelisting and native resolution playback for content has been added to Kodi over the years.

There are some people who spend a lot of time with MadVR and external player solutions in Windows PC Home Theatre builds working with graphics cards in them who push what PC upscaling can do.  Others now offline upscale their ripped content using tools like Topaz AI Video Enhance alongside the usual enhancement toolset in AVISynth etc.  (The latter solution isn't really Kodi related and better discussed over at VideoHelp etc.)
