new with Linux, XBMC not open
#1
Hi All,

this is my first message here- I have serious problem running XBMC .
My hardware :
Q9550
MB: Gigabyte EG45M-DS2
VGA crad: HD2600 pro(ATI)
RAM: 4gb GSKILL
HDD: 1*250 WD (OS only)
1*500gb WD

I instal on C (sharing with WIN) Ubuntu 8.4 , From some reason I can't run XBMC .
when I try to run it pop up for a sec and puffff....gone.
I really new with Linux and I'm working hard to config it , I run XBMC from the terminal as
xbmc -d
And get:
avi@avi-desktop:~$ xbmc -d
Fatal error encountered, aborting
Error log at /var/tmp/avi-xbmc.log
Aborted (core dumped)
I would attach the log but I don't see the option here(how come no option?)
from viewing the log I can't point on something that point on the problem...

Regarding open GL :
glxinfo | grep -i direct
And I got "yes"
(I understand it must)

I turn off all visual effect and still nothing
I re instal the VGA card :
"fglrxinfo"
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro
OpenGL version string: 2.1.7873 Release

I hope I wrote all needed information , I hope to handle this issue with ur kind support .
Please write with details .
Thanks in advance

How exactly did you install it? SVN? PPA? And did you read this -> http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=34655 You will want to use Pastebin for logs etc. BTW.

In case more details needed please advice how to get the needed logs.
Thanks in advance!

There's no *file* hosted here for linux. You either setup the PPA repository and installed it through apt, or checked out the source code and compiled yourself. Knowing which of the two of these you did is rather important in this situation. We can't help you if you aren't EXTREMELY specific.

I really hope there's a language barrier at work here...

Was it perhaps PPA from this thread? http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=35829

I am using XBMC from the PPA repo just fine at home, but tried to install it on my work machine yesterday with the same problem. Only difference is that it is using Ubuntu Server 8.04, no logs are created (though there is a xbmc directory in /tmp)

The window pops up momentarily then closes with a segfault - no other information.

If you have wins on the "hosts:" line in your /etc/nsswitch.conf file XBMC will not work.

Was quoting all that crap really necessary? It was all unrelated to your response and is just more trash to scroll through.
