can defaults be used with a custom window?  are includes/default only available to skin addons?

I have created ONE custom window for a video addon based off an existing addon.  works well, but I would like to set default sizes and colors for the few buttons and some other controls I have.  I tried adding the <includes>/<default> tags in the window.xml file and a separate includes.xml in the window.xml directory, but the changes were not picked up.  if I modify each control type individually the sizes/colors are picked up, but if I decide to further develop this, defaults would be helpful.

addons can not use includes, nor constants.
