I have mine next to the video on my PC and Shield TV and it opens immediately.

Does that option also work for internet streams? Where is then subtitle stored for later use? For that reason I have a separate Subtitle folder in storage/.kodi where subs are downloaded.
IIRC this did not work in 21-rc1; all subtitles were downloaded to storage/.kodi/temp folder, ignoring the setting pointing to my designated subtitle folder...
