When the library is updating itself, it puts something in the upper right to give the user visual feedback to what's going on.
When the pictures are generating thumbnails, nothing happens at all. In fact, when browsing to a folder with many pictures without thumbnails, the entire system hangs and appears to be frozen. If you wait long enough, it'll come back, but the first time that happened I thought the system had crashed.
Even if you go to Pictures and select Regenerate Thumbnails, nothing at all appears to be happening. In fact, I'm not sure on that one if anything does happen. It seems like the system just ignores it, and no thumbnails get generated, though it's possible I'm wrong, but I haven't actually managed to observe it generating any yet.
