For those who wants network boot, I have set up a project on google which describe the details.
This page
http://code.google.com/p/xbmc-image/wiki/SanBoot
is quite informative and you should be able to do network boot using the information provided (note: you need to customise your initramfs, which I will update on this topic later).
If you want to use a dedicated slim ubuntu variation like XBMC Live CD, you can try my script which will generate a network booting
ready disk image.
