[WINDOWS] HOW-TO setup Sony PS3 Bluetooth Remote Control to work with XBMC

I simply remote the BT device using the BT device manager and the select add device and pair with the remote. Then it works for a random amount of time before it does the "blinking" thing again.

Roughly how long do you go between occurrences of it. I've had it happen 2-3 times over the past month, but I can't nail down what may be causing it. I don't think that my HTPC coming in and out of sleep is helping the situation much. If I knew sleep was related to this issue I'd probably just leave it on 24x7 to resolve it. Also I think maybe a reboot is less painful than bluetooth re-pair - no?

I think once I managed to get out of it without reboot or re-pair, but I'm not sure how.

I'd love to hear anyone's feedback about how they deal with this. Otherwise this is a great one-remote solution for me.

I cant find a pattern either. I disabled sleep on my HTPC and that had no effect. I thought it was time-related (that is, the length of time between button presses or perhaps how long it had be in "hibernation" but this does not seem to be the case. I have two identical remotes on two different systems (but running the same OS) and they both do the blinking thing. It is a real mystery. Of course, the remotes dont do this when paired with a PS3. They work perfectly all the time. But they do work differently. See my post here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1475298 for details on power consumption.

I have purchased the older version and will try that one out. I've heard that that does not loose pairing. If that works then I guess I'll go with that permanently. I have also purchased the external IR dongle. I have a question if someone can help.

Is there a software that can learn from a totally different remote and replicate with XBMC? I would like to use the small WDLive Play TV remote for use with XBMC.

I've received the OLD PS3 Remote version and its a little larger than the new version. However the remote does not loose its pairing like the new one. I'll give it a proper test for a few days before any conclusion but it rather does look promising. The new version of the remote is disappointing when it gets into the flashing mode and a reboot of the PC is required.

I have found that if I press and hold some combination of the "TV" and "Aux" key for an unclear-yet amount of time, I can get the flashing to stop. Then I press PS3 and things are fine. No reboot, no re-pair. This has worked twice so far.

That may be true. I'll test the old PS3 remote for a few days. So far yesterday I kept pausing the movie every 5 minutes and the wife said there is something wrong with me. Smile All I was doing was checking if the remote can still wake up and its not dead. Alternatively I have installed the external IR and mapped MCE settings to the bose lifestyle v35 remote. That works well but I like the PS3 remote as I can do Netflix and other saved combinations with it.

I also like that the PS3 remote can turn my tv on and off and control the volume. My biggest concern right now is that i'm going to go through $50/year of batteries to keep it going.

Why don't u leverage the hibernate feature with 2.0.4. The battery lasts a long time if hibernate successfully works.

I can confirm that the old PS3 remote also looses pairing and a reboot is required. Note: The bluetooth keyboard stays connected though.
I've timed it. When the hibernate kicks off and if you press a button on the remote at that exact second, the remote will loose the sync. In my opinion if you can afford the battery's to constantly replace then this is the best. else the quest is still on sadly. I hope the OP looks at what PS3 uses to hibernate vs the generic windows hibernate.

I'm trying to use a PS3 remote as a replacement for the remote that came with my Zotac ZBOX ID61. The remote that came with the ZBOX is ok, but it has to be pointed right at the USB receiver, which is quite annoying. The PS3 remote works quite well and is very responsive. My only concern is that there is no way for the PS3 remote to suspend/resume the box or to turn the box on from an off state. Has anyone found a way to do any of those things using the PS3 remote? Having to use my original remote to turn the ZBOX on or bring it out of suspend state totally defeats the purpose of trying to use the PS3 remote as a "universal" remote.

I looked everywhere and tried a bunch of things, but I could never get the remote to wake the computer from sleep. I think it's because it communicates through bluetooth, but bluetooth isn't alive when in sleep, even if the USB port is listening. So I tap the space bar on my keyboard on the way to the couch, then use the PS3 remote from then on. If anyone can figure something out it would be great...

I hope someone figures out the hibernate feature of the remote on PS3 as the batteries is getting very expensive to manage. I have purchased about 5 remotes and none of them work as well as the ps3 when it works.

Agreed. The only platform I've experienced proper, reliable hibernation with the PS3 BD remote is OpenELEC; and even there, it only works with the previous stable version (3.0.6) coupled with an extra add-on ('PS3D'): the latest stable OE version (3.2) offers outstanding support for the remote out-of-the-box (no longer requiring a plugin); but lacks hibernation.

I have 3 viewing environments: one is OE 3.0.6 (hibernation is spectacular and reliable; and batteries last months); one is 3.2 (no hibernation at all); and one is Windows.
On Windows, I've left hibernate off due to the pairing side-effects that have been reported here.

Without hibernation, my 2400mAh AA batteries are dead in 10 days; so I've resorted to using rechargeables for those two environments - I just swap batteries once a week.

Irritating? Sure. But, for me at least, it's worth it since (as you say), this remote is absolutely amazing.

If you're really keen on working hibernation, you might want to try OE 3.0.6. Hopefully the more recent versions of OE will implement this soon as well.

With openElec, I will loose the Netflix capability that I have with Windows Media Center mapped to the red button on the PS3. I now have three remotes. One is the bose lifestyle which works as a WMC remote. I have plugged in the external IR and that works well but honestly the bose clicks does not give me the light and full featured remote. I've also purchased the 2.4 Ghz new xbmc boxee look a like remote but that makes the annoying click noise. I haven't figured how to remap the keys so I can work with that remote. Finally I use the PS3 remote until it dies off. So its kind of weird having three remotes and then the iphone remote.

Hello There, I have been using 2.0.4 for 6 months now with amazing success. Until Windows changed my bluetooth drivers and now its the weirdest thing whatever the latest button pressed on the bd remote it enters the previous one.
I downgraded by bluetooth drivers bot it didn't fix it i think the problems with the bt enumerator from microsoft (which i cant rollback or downgrade)

Help me please

Don't think so - sorry! You may be able to find an EventGhost plugin that let's you set it up, but I don't see it on the official list.

On a side-note: hibernation is now working in OpenELEC using a brand new test build, as discussed in this forum. It works excellently. The approach taken there is that instead of hibernating the remote after a timeout, it instead does so as soon as the XBMC screensaver starts up. The advantage is that you'll never be halfway through a movie and have the remote be disconnected for a few seconds whilst it wakes up Smile
