What does the fps look like when the stutter happens? Also what about aq: in CodecInfo? does it dropp to zero? did you set triplebuffer to true on xorg.conf?

Currently, playing any content at 60hz results in audio and video mantaining sync, regardless of source refresh rate (verified by OSD A/V display). Changing refresh rate to 24hz (via XRandR or the new Refresh Rate detection in SVN) results in A/V sync fluctuating between +0.05-0.09, which is fairly noticable with most content. I can verify the only difference between one setting and the other is the configured refresh rate.
This is more then likely not a CPU problem, as the issue occurs with both SD and HD material, and occurs when CPU usage on both cores is >30%. I'm starting to think it may be a deeper problem with my hardware configuration, and want to confirm that I'm not chasing an impossible configuration before I pursue it further.
Hardware is AMD X2 5600+ @2.9 Ghz with 8600 GT. Issue first appeared with Hardy and persisted once I upgraded to Intrepid Ibex. nVidia driver version is 177.80.
