1GB Memorex Travel Drive with U3 - works!

I tried the drives I happened to have around the house, and none worked. Then, I went to Target and bought an $11 drive, the Dane-Elec USB Portable Memory 2GB which didn't work either. So, I made a special trip out to Best Buy and bought a $20 SanDisk Cruzer Micro 2GB, model SDCZ6-2048-A11. Again, no joy.

Kudos to karmann for being the only person to post a link, but they are out of stock. Can anybody else tell us where they bought their working drive? I tried a search on the working 512GB drive mentioned in this thread but it wasn't available at any site I ever heard of before. It would be nice if there is a national retailer that carries a working drive, so everybody would know where to go to get it. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I finally correctly uninstalled U3 on that Cruzer and ran the patchstick creator on a G5 instead of the MacBook and everything worked out.

BTW, how can I tell if my patchstick failure was caused by the drive or something else. The first drive I tried was an unlabeled promotional freebie from a local hospital and it kept spontaneously unmounting during the creation process. The rest failed during the creation of the installation of recovery on the target disk. Here is an example of a log:

2Z694-5428-3.dmg selected
Verifying SHA1 of DMG image...
Extracting boot.efi ...
Creating USB Flash Disk...
umount_disk settling delay (10 seconds)
partition the target disk
umount_disk settling delay (10 seconds)
install recovery onto target disk
Unable to mount image: hdiutil: attach failed - Resource busy
install_recovery failed
Failed! (0:01:15)

Also, if I reformat a drive, what format should I use, FAT or Mac OS Extended journaled, or unjournaled, or what?. That SanDisk Cruzer Micro had U3, so I tried all three above and none worked. Thanks

Sandisk Cruzer Micro U3 1GB (with U3 uninstalled) works like a charm. I'm not at home right now, but I'll check the model number when possible. It's old anyway, so I wouldn't count on being able to buy that same model anywhere.

What USB flash drives work with atvusb-creator?

The following information has been compiled from my review of multiple discussion forums (including this one) where individuals have reported success or failures with different USB flash drives. Not all USB flash drives work for making modifications on the Apple TV.

USB drives have been reported to fail in a number of different ways:
1) USB Drives cannot be repartitioned or reformatted as needed
2) The Apple TV will not boot from the USB drive
3) The Apple TV boots from the USB drive but fails during the install process

Many modern USB flash drives are shipping with pre-installed software/partitioning configuration known as a "U3 Smart Drive". Such USB drives present themselves as two drives; a read only CD-Rom drive and a regular read/write removable drive. This software/partitioning scheme needs to be removed before using the USB flash with the Apple TV. Removal tools for U3 software can be found at:

This has been mentioned several times and is an invaluable tool to this process of patchsticking in the world of windows.

My San Disk Cruzer Micro 1GB did finally work after I finally got an old QuickSilver G4 PowerMac running with 10.4 to run the U3 uninstaller app. The reason none of my drives worked has something to do with my MacBook, because it worked fine on my G5 PM. I am now enjoying XBMC on my ATV and I will edit my post that said the Cruzer didn't work.
