Apple TV PatchStick question for Windows?

I'm totally new to this and have read as much as i can and came across this:

I know the XBMC team is developing a patchstick for windows to be ready soon:

So my question is are what the XBMC team is creating and what the people from patchstick.com are selling, are they essentially the same thing? Looks nice but why pay for it?
