[REQUEST] Skype (VoIP) Phone Script for XBMC?
#16
I would also like to request that maybe some sort of plugin for xbmc to support skype be made. I use skype on my htpc to talk to family and friends all the time.

Features I think would be useful:
show caller id on incoming with Answer or Ignore option
Pause media on answer and resume on termination.

LinuxMCE have telephony capabilities incorporated into the system, based on Asterisk server, but then again LMCE has more complex setup than XBMC. Im running an Asterisk server in my home, and got it to announce the incoming calls on to the XBMC screen (with http notification msg .. very simple: http://trixbox.org/forums/trixbox-forums...layed-xbmc ) but it would definitely be nice to add like "Send to Voice Mail" and other functions.

My perfect setup will be that i will be using a dedicated VoIP handset to answer my phone call, but it would be great to incorporate a cam that can be displayed inside the XBMC in case of video calls (i find it not very practical to use mic and my stereo speakers to answer calls .. too loud and everybody is listening to the conversation Smile

if some one call you. You can answer here

(and that is still client on your media pc)

we just need "VIDEO" option integrated to XBMC and also this sound "incoming call" feature will be great.

Looks like this request will be supported natively by new TV sets before XBMC supports it!

Pitty cause I envision a Media Centre taking over my entire lounge, media, music, skype, tv, and even home automation. Hell even order from dominoes pizza!! Tall order but someone will do it sooner or later.

Did anyone start this? I cant find any code anywhere so I am going to presume not.

Will take a look at the Skype API and XBMC's plugins over the next couple of weeks as I now use XBMC for everything media based at home.

If someone has already started this, can you please let me know!

That has been on its way for a while. I was starting to think skype was yanking our chain.

Its a limited invite only beta right now.
could be a while for the skypekit SDK to become stable and public

this might be helpful if you can't wait.

Thumbs Up
I think this is a seriously good idea and it would expand XBMC from being an (awesome) media player into more of a living room hub (where Microsoft and Sony are also competing these days).

Video conferencing could be a "killer app" for XBMC. No need to build the functionality from scratch, but simple GUI controls and pausing media content on incoming skype calls would go a long way to improve user experience. Optional integration with something like Ekiga for open source, higher definition video conferencing would be cool, but Skype is key due to the user base.

If anyone fancies working on this, don't underestimate the opportunity to reach out to Skype developers if they need to iron out any kinks: their linux developers do read and reply (occasionally) in the Skype Linux forums: http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showforum=18

if it itches that bad, why not take up python and do it yourselves?
python's not that difficult to learn, and once you start and put up some code on svn somewhere, some experienced python coder could help with bug fixing.
check the wiki on coding plugins/scripts for xbmc
For those who haven't seen it - new member of the forum eoin is having a stab at building Google Talk VoIP + Video functionality for XBMC! If you are interested in seeing this come to fruition, make sure you support eoin with ideas, functional requirements and testing as much as you can!

I echo the suggestion that Skype be looked at as an add on. Hopefully someone with some sort of programming/addon knowledge will see this as necessary for a home theater.
