Hi,
Today I have been enlightened. Ubuntu install from start to finish was less hectic than a Windows install.
What I wanted to accomplish:
1) Install ubuntu (check)
2) Mount Windows NTFS partition (check)
3) install ATI drivers (check)
4) install xbmc and configure it
5) autologin user and autostart xbmc (check)
6) set up lirc (check but still needs some button configuring)
7) fix ATI underscan (not done)
8) set up Samba between HTPC and other PC in the house (not done)
All in all not a bad start.
So anyone know how to fix the black frame around the screen (underscan) ? The Windows CCC has a slider to adjust over/underscan; LINUX just a button to click scale to screen or not.
