The "dev.cdrom.lock=0" trick worked for me, however I get warning of unsafe device removal (same thing what happens with USB storage.) I think the right way would be a context menu in XBMC that lets you safely unmount and remove devices. It could even call the eject command to eject the tray after unmounting.
