Finally got to the root cause...
When overwriting files, on the XBOX "sometimes" they are not ALL overwritten.
I opened an updated version of XBMC (RAR file) on the XBOX using XBMC & copied it to the old XBMC location, some files where updated, some not, this has happened to me several times & I thought it might have been a decompression error but it's a file overwrite error.
And no the XBMC installation I was updating was not the active one, also deleting all the files & then decompressing to to the same place resulted in perfect decompression.
