[AppleTV] XBMC ATV Patchstick Creator for Windows released
#1
Thumbs Up
http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/

Download and unzip. Enclosed are a two batch files with associated disk images that are 7-zipped and a set of tools.

These batch file can be used to create AppleTV patchstick disk images.

The minimum USB flash drive supported is 256MB.

USB flash drives can be restored back to full size using the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool from here -> http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197

Also note that it can not still have U3 software on it (so uninstall that first if you have U3 USB flash memory drive).

There are two disk image versions:

mk-atv-xbmc.bat will create a disk image that will install

1) bintuils
2) SoftwareMenu-0.71
3) XBMCLauncher-0.6

Use this version if you already have ssh on your AppleTV that
was installed by a previous patchstick.

mk-atv-xbmc-ssh.bat will create a disk image that will install

1) ssh
2) bintuils
3) SoftwareMenu-0.71
4) XBMCLauncher-0.6

SoftwareMenu can be used to install other AppleTV Plugins.

XBMCLauncher is used to install and launch either XBMC or Boxee.

These batch files should be run from a command prompt.

Start -> Run -> cmd

Run either batch file and it will download, extract and inject boot.efi
into the disk image. Everything will be automatically done so you don't
need to manually extract or download anything.

Once the disk image is created, use "USB Image Tool" to do the actual
copy to USB flash drive. Run "USB Image Tool", switch from "Volume Mode"
to "Device Mode". Select your USB flash drive then select the disk image
using the "Restore" button. This tool does work in Vista but will need to
be run as administrator. To do this right-click on "USB Image Tool.exe"
then select "run as administrator".

Good Luck, Issues can be posted here;

http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/issues/list

Please be complete in describing any problems as we cannot see what has
been done.

Enjoy and please be careful selecting the desired USB flash drive Smile

Confirmed working on MCE XP/SP3 (Pro) with an ATV factory restore and Apple update.
Small typo in the readme:
"mk_atv-xbmc.bat will create a disk image that will install"
And:
"mk_atv-xbmc-ssh.bat will create a disk image that will install"

Should be mk-atv-xbmc...etc

Other than that, it's working flawlessly and gave me a chance to use Windows Wink

Thanks Davilla, appreciated.

And we have a winner on WinXP, the first to post any information (yes/no) Smile Thanks for trying it, it's always pins and needles until I get some feed back.

The typo was a late name change, the "-" is easer to type than "_" as no shift key is involved. Changed in source origin but I won't update the download unless there is some problem.

I must chime in on the negative side.
Tried this on 2 different systems so far with 3 different USB sticks.
Everything works fine until I attempt to restore the img file back to a USB stick. The Restore progress bar only gets to 2 bars each time, then it stops and the program resets as if it had just been launched.

Suggestions ?

******* EDIT *******

No idea why ... but the GUI approach did not cooperate completely .. but the command line version of USB Image Tool did.
I retract and now state that my Windows USB stick is good and a nuke 'n pave on my ATV 2.2 is now running XBMC Atlantis due to the new Windows USB stick Smile
#6
Can you guys please post here what USB thumb sticks you are using for this?
#7
Davilla you are a star - many thanks Big Grin

Slippy, you might want to look at this thread - http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=38870 - it lists all known working and non-working USB sticks.

You did select "Device Mode", correct?

"command line version of USB Image Tool did", funny I could never get the comand-line version to list the devices, WinXP, sp2 on Parallels

Yep, yep .. Device mode was selected and used for the GUI. Even tried Volume mode (even though I knew it would nuke the bootable ability) just to see if I could get an image on the USB stick OK.

Attempted the GUI approach on XP Pro SP3 32-bit and XP Pro SP2 64-bit.
When the command line app worked on x64, I kissed the ground and stopped the experiments there .. it was kinda late and I wanted to get the ATV back up 'n running.

As for "usbitcmd.exe l", it worked fine for me indicating my USB stick was device # 2468 and away I went Big Grin

Many thanks again for the Windows approach ... I was holding onto my old iBook G3 Clamshell just for ATV USB creation. So the iBook can finally be put out to pasture.

Stupid Windows Sad , the person below also did it on XP/SP3, did not say if home or pro and was successful. God only knows the differences Smile

WINBLOWS is more appropriate.

I've got a strange one...
The mk-atv-xbmc-ssh.bat creates an image file (250,000 kbytes), but mk_atv-xbmc.bat errors out with

** Extracting target disk image, this will take several minutes
** this is a lengthy process and this will take 5-10 minutes

I haven't tried the image as yet on the ATV, as I manually installed a while ago, and am unsure what would happen if I installed this image (with ssh).

That's odd, all 7z is doing is un-compressing atv-xbmc.7z to atv-xbmc.img

if you edit the bat file, you can see exactly what it's doing.

do you have a linux box?

Nope, Windows (doze)...

With echo off remarked out...
