Thanks! This works for me also, and I don't care about navigation sounds so I'm happy!
Symptons for me were:
Videos played fine with sound (analog via HDMI to TV, digital passthrough via SPDIF to stereo)
Music refused to play using PAPlayer (the player window loaded with the CD cover, etc... but the progress bar stayed at 0, and errors appeared in the log. Occasionally XBMC would crash at this point)
Music played fine with DVDPlayer.
I'm happy to provide a log with the errors if it will help anyone?
