difference between movies and videos?
#1
Hi,

What is the intended difference between Movies and Videos with regards to xbmc? It's not clear to me what the "Movies" tab is for, is it for playing local discs?

thanks

Are you using the MediaStream skin? The menu items are specific to the skin that you're running. I believe Aeon lists Clips, Movies, and TV whereas MediaStream lists Videos, Movies, and TV.

Personally, I use TV Shows for all of the TV shows that I keep or have many of (basically anything with more than 1 complete season on my media server). Movies is self-explanatory. Then Videos gets used for all of the recent episodes that I won't load into the library and won't save for more than a couple weeks (most stay on only a day or two). This makes it easy to find the recent episodes I need to watch and separates out the movies and tv shows that I'll be watching later.

Ok, I thought Movies must be meant for something else because when I click on it I get a message saying "No scanned information for this view Switch to the Files view"
I guess that's a different issue though.

thanks

you need to scan your sources into the library before anything will be shown in library view

Hmm, I don't know where I should scan sources for Movies? The Setup menu doesn't have a Movies sub-section with a Library tag.

Oops. When I came back looking for this, I realized it was in the MediaStream forums. Oops. Smile

shmish, you'll find all the detailed instructions you need in the xbmc user manual wiki, in particular, see http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Video_Library and http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Videos_Navig...ntext_Menu, but in nutshell, setup is easy if you:
  • copy all your video files into your videos source location, whether that's locally (on your xbox or pc) or another external location (such as a NAS)
  • have subfolders in there for tv, movies, short clips, whatever you want
  • set the content type on your tv and movies folders - use the context menu as per instructions at the second link above - to bring up the context menu, you can also you press the title button on the xbox remote, or right-click a folder with your mouse if you're on a pc
  • using the context menu again, choose the options to scan the folders to the library
  • now when you go to the tv or movies sections, you will see your tv shows and movies in library mode
  • when you go to videos, you will see all of your videos in file mode i.e. just folders and files listed, not library mode

in any section (tv, movies or videos), you can switch between library and file mode at any time, but by default, tv & movies will launch in library mode, and videos in file mode.

The online user manual should answer any other questions you have...

Cheers,
Adam.

There's a tutorial on setting up sources in MediaStream in this blog: http://gajitts.wordpress.com/
