Optical sound woes
#1
Hi all.

I have a problem when using XBMC and diffrent audio channels.

For instance:

On a newly booted Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS the sound works perfectly in for instance Firefox and youtube. Then I start XBMC.. runs an old TV episode in divx/xvid using only 2 channel of audio. Works fine. When I change to a DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1 the amp switches to 5.1 channel and the sound comes out perfectly. BUT! If it go back to a 2.0 (stereo) file in XBMC I get no sound. Same in Firefox.

So it seems like there something strange going on. If I reboot Ubuntu the sound is comming back. And works fine in 2.0

I've uninstalled pulseaudio

my setup:

Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS
XBMC final PPA
Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2H with Realtek ALC889A audio chipset
Sound connected with Toslink (Optical) from the Motherboard.

Any suggestions?

Did you ever solve this? I'm having a similar problem, though my sound does not disappear completely. It's just really weak and buzzing.

Yes.

In the sound settings I use plug:iec958 instead of default and in passthru i just use iec958.

My amp does the decoding.

But I still got "looping" sound and complete computer freeze-ups. But I know if it's a ALSA problem or XBMC.. It happends sometimes. Not very frequently. But still a tad annoying

and yes. I have get rid of all PulseAudio stuff (apt-get remove --purge)

If it's weak. Make sure the optical cable is properly seated. It should 'click' in place.
