ATI driver, Ubuntu, xorg.conf and amdpcsdb
#1
Im getting nuts. Every now and then Im trying the latest drivers from ATI, and realize every time they dont work for my XBMC. All movies are like in slow motion.

I then try to get the standard ATI drivers from the package manager, 8.552, but something is fucked up. My amdpcsdb in /usr/share/ati are gone and I dont know why. Without it I cant fix for my underscan, and know I have to use the "aticonfig --set-pcs-val=MCIL,DigitalHDTVDefaultUnderscan,0" to fix that...

But as it is now, I can start the htpc with a vga flatscreen. Fine.
But when I start with only my plasma OR plug the plasma in when the VGA are running, X seems to crash..

So, to the question. What are the right way/order to install the ATI-driver, after you fucked up some things.....?

Thanks..

I've been using the Catalyst drivers for a while now with Mythbuntu 8.10.

No problems thus far other than the known problems with the earlier ATI drivers (e.g. garbled screen in full screen mode unless started using sudo). I have underscan issues when the resolution is set to 1920x1080. My LCD panel is only 720p though and using a resolution of 1360x768 doesn't have any underscan problems so I guess I'm lucky there.

I've installed ATI Catalyst 8.12 and 9.1 using the instructions at http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_...s_manually without any problems thus far.

My xorg.conf is simply the one created by the aticonfig command line tool.

Movies all run in "normal" speed. No tearing with VSync turned on all the time, but I have a constant stutter/hestitation in video playback (not audio) every 1.5 seconds or so (very noticeable with credits rolling up the screen) no matter what content I'm playing back or what the CPU usage is. No idea what is causing that - happens with Adjust Framerate turned on or off.

strange. For me all the newer driver make my fps go nuts, and therefor it seems like slow motion. Pretty much a basic xorg.conf for me to.

The green screen in fullscreen was solved for me with the right xbmc for ubuntu 8.10, so no need for SUDO for me.

The underscan I HAD a solution for before, but now after reinstalled all the drivers back and forth, I have no amdpcsdb anymore..
working on it...

I solved my problem with the FPS. I hade vsync always on in both cccp and XBMC. After little help from the forum I now dont have strange FPS.

And my droppes I had with ATI 8.552 now also seems to be gone with the ATI Cat 9.1 Drivers..

Maybe I was a little bit too fast there...

My droppes are not as often now as before, but suddenly I get about 8 droppas at one time.

First, 5 droppes from starting the movie..then no droppas as often as before with 8.552, but suddenly, after say 8-10 min, I get a couple of em, from 5-13 droppes in one time..

Strange?

I saw the same thing. First I thought, that the drops have gone, but when watching a movie yesterday, I saw that I have still drops, but less than before. Maybe 6 times 5-10 frames in a two hour movie...

I hade first 5 from starting, and then +8 in a about 40 min Eureka x264, with a couple of pauses. All +8 came at one time...

You may want to try this one out. This is ATI's open-source hardware acceleration driver for linux supporting h.264.

Have you also tried their newly released Catalyst 9.1 drivers for Linux?

Getting feedback on this from you would be great as I'm looking at converting my Vista/Mediaportal honky system into a XBMC/MythTV kick ass box this weekend..

Anyone tried to lock the framerate at 24hz with the catalyst drivers? I've tried changing it there, and in preferences. But everytime I reboot, the refresh rate is set back to 60hz.

Any tips?

Edit: using catalyst drivers

Today I updated my alsamixer, following this guide

http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=HOW-TO:_Inst...st_version

Before that all have done is to uninstall pulseaudio, and installed the other following this guide:

http://www.xbmc.nu/index.php?option=com_...pulseaudio

And now, I could watch a whole movie with only 6 drops from the start of the movie...

So my guess that the uninstall of pulseaudio, to be able to use XBMC in Ubuntu 8.10, had something to do with my drops, was correct.

Try it.

Hmm, the same day, I found the "downmix multiplechannels to stereo" in the settings for xbmc. I guess that option was eneble.

Now when disable, I get droppes sometimes again. I THINK, this has something to do with it.

BUT, even when the option is eneble, I get DTS and DD5.1 sound, so what does the option do? O use Digital, and checked for DTS and IEC958

Sorry for my bull shit talk. =)

I really dont think it has to do with any of the settings in my XBMC to do. I also dont think it has to do anything else I can do something about. =)

Im yesterday downloaded the R18653 Build 15/3 and now I can watch a movie without any more drops then the first from the start of the movie.

Just like when I updated my ALSA, I also updated the XBMC, and it was probably an good version of XBMC.

So, what can it be that makes those drops?
