Why doesnt XBMC remeber settings at reboot?
#1
Hi
Im new to the forum and new to linux in general and would like to start up by saying thanx for all guides and tips i have found here.

I am currently trying to set up a media network with 1 server, 1 xbox, 1 desktop and 1 laptop.

I have managed to set this up, atleast satisfactory for now, with samba share working on all computers and the xbox.

The trouble is that when i start up the pc that functions as the htpc, my screen resolution is wrong. it starts up like a small screen inside X and i can se X on the right and bottom side.
If i change the resolution in XBMC settings all is good and no problems. But if i restart the htpc then XBMC doesnt remeber my setting and i have to set the resolution every time i restart the computer. The same goes for audio and media source settings so i dont think its a xorg fault. (had to change audio from analog to digital, add source etc. each time i restart)

I followed interpid HOWTO guide and incorporated this guide for ATI
so my SW are Intrepid 8.10 with ATI catalyst 9.1 and XBMX SVN from yesterday (1.february)

Anyone got any ideas as to why XBMC doesnt remeber settings?

Sounds like a problem with write permissions to you configuration.

Did you install XBMC from the repository, or did you manually install it by downloading the binaries?

I followed the instructions i section "Download, compile, and install XBMC from source " in the guide.

If you're not used to working with linux, compiling can be tricky because of the rights structure in linux.

Try following this guide for installation of the latest pre-compiled build Smile

thanx for the reply, but i seems that i dont have support for deb:
xbmc@xbmc:/$ deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main
-bash: deb: command not found

The guide i used for installing XBMC uses a miniCD and only installs Openssh. And since the guide is added to xbmc.org/wiki and i copy/paste the commands, i have doubts about getting it wrong..
The only additional steps i did after following the guide up to "Install Splash" was to install samba and edit fstab for automount of ntfs hdd`s.
Could samba have done something to write permission?

sry, went a bit fast there.
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list file is the way to go

Use sudo with the deb command. Regular users doesn't have rights to use that command, and also won't have it in their $PATH.
Code:
sudo deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc-intrepid/ppa/ubuntu intrepid main

Definitely Repository is the way to go. I didn't even try to compile.

You skipped the "sudo make install" step of the install from source instructions. After that you'll have a command "xbmc" to launch XBMC appropriately and your settings will be stored in ~/.xbmc/. The actual xbmc-bin binary shouldn't be run manually unless you know what you're doing. In general, XBMC should NOT be run from the source tree unless you're a dev and know the consequences of what you're doing.
