[LIVE] Defininitive method for upgrading NVIDIA drivers on XBMC Live install?
#1
I've installed XBMC Live 9.04.1 to my HDD and I'd like to upgrade the latest nVidia drivers (185.44 or maybe 190.xx beta, etc).

I've tried using the nVidia PPA but it broke my XBMC Live install.

Does anybody have a method that really works and doesn't break XBMC Live? (eg. the auto-boot, etc)

I'd also like a method to install the latest drivers (if possible) and not have the wait for a pre-compiled package, etc.

Thanks so much for any help

the LIVE distro is not supposed to be upgraded with nvidia driver. capriotti, the maintainer of the LIVE build, did an updated driver here http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=52605 but in general, you will definitely screw up the LIVE system when you try to manually upgrade the nvidia driver.
if you need to use the latest driver, go the XBMCbuntu route.
OpenElec Standalone --> Asus Chromebox 'Panther' --> Onkyo TX-NR709 --> Sony 55" X85C Android TV (also with Kodi!)
Asus Chromebox EZ Script
Kodi on Sony Bravia Android TVs

That's incorrect. I am running Live, upgraded to the latest SVN ,and the latest drivers. I did 'screw' the build, as you put it, when I first installed the drivers, until I ran the line of code here:

http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=XBMCbuntu#In...ptional.29

about installing a proper kernel build environment. I ran this:
Code:
sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs fakeroot dh-make debhelper debconf libstdc++5 dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r)

and it rebuilt my kernel and off I went Smile

So you installed the drivers using that NVIDIA*.run file?

How did you rebuild the kernel?

I've installed the drivers both ways (using the .sh file, and straight from the nvidia PPA's). The last time I updated, I installed using the PPA's. I rebooted and nothing came up on the screen. I SSH'd in, ran that command I quoted above, and it rebuilt automagically. Rebooted and all was good.
