so it appears that dvr-ms files have been falling off the support map for XBMC linux. What are others using then when recording tv with their capture cards?

According to Wikipedia this is just MPEG2 with MPEG1-II or AC3 audio wrapped in a crappy proprietary M$ container. Should be playable without problems, once you unwrap it. Ever tried simply renaming it to .asf and look if it plays?

Anyway - i directly grab the transport stream from the dvb device - so it would be .ts
