DivX 5.1 / 5.2 Pro decoder in XBMC?
#1
i'm surprised no one's mentioned the release of divx 5.2 here. anyway i encoded a movie with this new version using some of the new features like adaptive multiple b-frames and mpeg quantisers and it seems to be playing fine on xbmc. haven't sat down to watch the whole thing yet but the first 5-10 minutes played fine as near as i could tell.
i know it's not exactly a conclusive test but i just thought i'd let ya know and maybe other people can post their experience with the new version on xbmc.

we already (several times) said it works, however officialy it is not supported because ffmpeg nor mplayer support divx 5.1 or divx 5.2,
...this is from the list of frequently requested new codec support pinned thread "to all people requesting new codecs, read this!":
Quote:- divx 5.1.1 and/or 5.2 (fyi, most newer divx-encodes already play fine in xbmc anyway as it's done via ffmpeg)
to officialy get divx 5.2 support in xbmc you either have to get ffmpeg to reverse-engineer it or get mplayer to use the dll divxdec.ax
edit: if anyone like to encurage mplayer-devs to add dll support subscribe to mplayer-dev-eng mailing-list then reply to this thread (link)

fyi, here's the replies from mplayer-devs when request of divxdec.ax dll usage to decode fourcc "div5"/"div5" was suggested:
  * [mplayer-dev-eng] [request] divx pro 5.2 dll (divxdec.ax) in mplayer?
        - [mplayer-dev-eng] [request] divx pro 5.2 dll (divxdec.ax) in mplayer?
        - [mplayer-dev-eng] [request] divx pro 5.2 dll (divxdec.ax) in mplayer?
        - [mplayer-dev-eng] [request] divx pro 5.2 dll (divxdec.ax) inmplayer?
           # [mplayer-dev-eng] [request] divx pro 5.2 dll (divxdec.ax) in mplayer?
           # [mplayer-dev-eng] [request] divx pro 5.2 dll (divxdec.ax) in mplayer?
              # [mplayer-dev-eng] [request] divx pro 5.2 dll (divxdec.ax) in mplayer?
                * [mplayer-dev-eng] [request] divx pro 5.2 dll (divxdec.ax) in mplayer?

to sum up what the mplayer-devs basicaly said/felt: mplayer-team-devs will not code this themself on request, however they would consider implementing it (as an option) if someone else program/code it and send a patch for it. (though personaly the mplayer-devs oppose to using dll codecs in general as they are slower and not so error resilent). basides, all divx 5.x. encodes should play anyway in mplayer as divx 5.x is a mpeg4-codec which should decode as a standard-mpeg4-stream by ffmpeg-mpeg4-codec, so if a specific divx 5.x media-file don't work (or have problems/bugs, like ex. artefacts, etc.) in latest mplayer for linux or windows (but plays fine with the divx 5.x official codec in a other player then) please report it as a bug to mplayer plus submit a sample of the specific media-file to them.

ps! @Sarsippius, there's no problem with you posting this thread as now we can refer to it when other people ask the same thing Wink
