My bad. It seems that 9.04.1.repack2 will happily play the majority of my idx/sub subtitled movies. For some weird reason it didn't want to show them for the first two movies I tried, so that led me to conclude it didn't work at all. But I've since seen that it works fine for 90+ % of all my idx/subs.
