Question  Newbie needs plugin help Post: #1
Hello all, first time using XBMC, first, it rocks, but, I don't understand how to download plugins. The main xbmc.org plugins page just says comming soon. The wiki page just tells you what directory to place them in. I don't even know what to look for, is it a single file, an install program? Is there a central location to describe what any particular plugin does? I cannot find any lists to any files or anything to download at all. I may be missing something "hidden in plain sight" but I really can't find anything. Thank you very much for any help.

running xbmc on a mac mini, 10.4.11

you should read up on a couple threads to help understand how it works better. basically, plugins go into q:\plugins\ and then video, programs, music, or pictures.
you need a fairly recent version of XBMC to run the plugins. i'd suggest babylon from http://xbmc.org/download/ since it is the latest stable version.

this is what you should use to download a wide variety of plugins (reading first page should be enough, but if you have problems read more):
New Online Repository for plugins (with a public SVN) http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=29911

another helpful way to install plugins (this is a Script. put it into q:\scripts):
[RELEASE] Passion-XBMC Installer Script http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=42612

and yet another way to get mostly video plugins (put into q:\plugins\video):
Google Code Plugin http://www.xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?p=259295

for questions about any plugin in particular, use the Search feature at the top of any page (3rd item from the right), or even go to google and type in "site:xbmc.org xxx" with xxx being the name of a plugin or whatever you want to learn more about.

welcome to XBMC!

Nicoli, Thank you. That got me in the right direction and I really appreciate it! Xbmc is awsome, I was using Snapstream Beyon Media, which is cool, but this is much better. Thanks again. Big Grin

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but i cant get plugins to install. I've followed the tutorial videos to no avail. Here is what i'm doing:

1. Extract plugin (let's say vidmonkey) into C:\XBMC\Plugins\Video
2. Go to VIDEO in XBMC and ADD source
3. Navigate to "Video Plugins" folder (not C:\XBMC\Plugins\Video)

But the only thing I see in there is the apple trailers plugin that comes with XBMC. I'm using Babylon btw.

Ok my guess is that you are on windows and didn't do the stand alone install, that means you should install your plugin in Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Xbmc\Plugins\Video instead of C:\XBMC\Plugins\Video

By the way since Atlantis you don't need to do the add source (unless you want to have your plugin at the root level), it is automatically added to the folder 'my Video plugins' for example
