"sudo nmap -sT -O localhost" should show that it is listening right? It's not...

Works for me. You sure you aren't using something that needs the eventserver interface?

EDIT: "netstat -tpl" should show it.

No the XBMC Remote for iPhone depends on the webserver. I have it running on my Windows machine
