If you have a motherboard with onboard audio and a spdif header, you could try connecting it to your gfx card.

I have built loads of PCs from scratch but I have to admit I have no idea where on the gfx card to connect to.

ATI cards can do HDMI audio w/o more hardware. Nvidia cards need an audio pass-through cable.

wonderful link. That tells me what I want to do which i already know.. It's not telling me how to do it though..

I have never been into A/V stuff so this is new to me, I am used to setting up gaming rigs.

I also figured that rather than google it properly (I did have a quick google incase there was a good tutorial near the top of the list) and spend hours wading through the crap that comes back looking for the gems. It would be quick and easier to ask here where people have done it, in the hope they could link me the tutorial they used or write one that could be added to the wiki so others could benefit.

On my Nvidia card there is a loop cable that goes from the soundcards digital output into the VGA connector on the graphics card to enable passthrough of digital sound on HDMI.

There is no how-to link because you don't need one. Either your card comes with a passthrough cable or it doesn't. If it has one, then finding where it plugs into the card is a no-brainer. Sounds like it doesn't have one.

The 9400GT is a low-end card. Most of these don't even have HDMI, let alone allow for passthrough audio. To see what the cable looks like,

click on Image Gallery. The cable plugs into the SPDIF port on the mobo. Easy enough to make the cable from spare wires, assuming your card has pins to connect it to.

Audio through HDMI isn't cut and dried. If you've perused through Google, lots of problems with drivers and implementations, even with good cards from well-known vendors.

It did come with a 2 (?) pin cable but i wasnt sure what that was for (no documentation). Mine does have a HDMI port. looking at the link I guess the audio pins must be the white (fan type) pins at the top as the bottom one has a fan connected (my card is passively cooled so wasn't sure if they were for fans or what).

I just want to be very sure as I really am on a tight budget and can't afford to replace *any* parts if I break them.

I have the same card. The white connector at the top is indeed needed for audio passthrough.
Just use the 2 pin cable and connect it to the S/PDIF header on your motherboard.

Depending on your motherboard you may also have to change the S/PDIF header function in the BIOS.

Thanks ronnie that's what I thought (just got home and took a look at the circuitry on the back).

Seems my M/B doesn't have an internal s/pdif.. Might be able to connect directly to my SB audigy 2, if i can work out which pins to use.
