How to tell if a movie is 720p or 1080p?
#1
I have a bunch of HD movies, but I don't know which ones are 720p and which ones are 1080p. What's the quickest and easiest way to tell? I'd like to add a 720p or 1080p suffix to each file name. Thanks.

So if a movie is 1920x1080, then it is definitely 1080p?

what did you think 1080p and 720p meant?

720/1080 = the number of horizontal lines.
p = progressive.

Well I guess I was a little confused.

Does Windowed Mode downgrade 1080p movies to 720p? Because if I play a movie in Windowed Mode that I could have sworn was 1080p, and I hit the O button, it says that it is in 720p. This was what confused me I think.

that's the screen/window resolution. yes, we scale to whatever resolution the screen/window has.

Press "z" and it'll tell you the original resolution and the scaled resolution:

And when you are trying to decide if something is 1080p or 720p, pay more attention the width than the height because although 1080p is technically 1920x1080, a movie at 1920x800 is still marketed as 1080p.

Not really Nerd . Like spiff said, 720/1080 is defined by the number of horizontal lines and has nothing to do with the number of vertical lines. Why you ask? Probably because there is something like aspect ratio's. If 1920x1080 was "the" 1080 then a source with a 4:3 or a 2,39:1 aspect ratio could never be 1080. Your example is a special case. Most movies are shot in a wider then 16:9 aspect ratio. To compensate, they add black bars making it 1080 lines high. However in our quest to save HDD space we re-encode the movie cropping the black bars.
To get on topic. If you're looking for a quick but no water proof way to spot a 1080 from a 720 quickly, just check de file size Nod .

It's hardly a special case for my collection... and I would bet most of us on this site who happen to acquire our HD movies in a certain manner. Smile Even the 1.85:1 movies I have are something like 1920x1040. So if I want to be technical, the only 720p or 1080p media I have that actually have a height of 720 or 1080 are some TV episodes and all my movies aren't 1080pHD since they are only 1040p or 800p. Gathering info from everyone who posted here as well as my own personal research, I have discovered a watertight method of determining if a movie is 1080p or 720p. It's not as simple as just looking at the pixel height of a movie since, as noted, sometimes the author will remove the black bars to keep the file size lower. BUT one thing I have noticed, as noted as well, that 1080p movies are always 1920 pixels high, while 720p are always 1280 pixels high.

So here is the method, for whoever runs into the same confusion I had:

1. Start the movie and press "o" on the keyboard.
2. On the second line, it will show the pixel height and width indicated by ####x####.
3. Look at the first number. If it's 1920 then you have a 1080p movie. If it's 1280 then you have a 720p movie.

I have yet to find an exception to this rule. It would be nice if XBMC simply said the quality when you push "o" instead of having to this math, albeit simple math.

It would also be nice if the Library automatically tagged each HD movie with either 1080p or 720p so we quickly know which movies are in HD. Currently I have to switch to file mode and then organize by size to get all the HD movies to the top, as well as personally tag each movie with (1080p) or (720p) at the end of the filename, which also only shows up in file mode.

This is coming. I don't think it's going to make it into 9.04 but it's actually already been hacked in somewhat when you use the Aeon skin and MIP to scan your media.
