Asking just in case, even though I don't think it's the case: does anyone experience issues with the sound (like sound in the movies and navigation sounds stop working) in the recent builds (eg, 20078)?

Had to hard-reboot the server today, after which the sound in the XBMC disappeared (well, I did update XBCM right after reboot before starting XBMC again, hence not 100% sure whether it's the build problem or the 'normal' alsa crash). Had it happen to me couple of times before (as to many other people here), but none of the fixes that used to work are working now. ALSA mixer says that IEC958 is on, sound-test works. Recompiled ALSA from the scratch, still nothing.

So, before I start debugging it further, just wanted to confirm if anyone else experiencing the same issue.

PS: I'm not using pulse-audio - in fact have it disabled through 'configure' flags. Using plain analog output.

Well, I feel stupid, to say the least.... But it probably would give you a good laugh. My server is in the corner of the room, with the back of the server (where all connectors in my computer case are) not easily accessible and visible from the outside. Turns out the cleaning lady did her job too eagerly this morning and accidentally unplugged the audio connector from the other size of the shelf the case is standing in........

Well, it's not always the 'high tech' stuff that we should blame....
