Localized Rating - International Certification Ratings for Movies (MPAA, BFCC, FSK)?

Hey all,

Was wondering how difficult it would be to scrape international classifications based on the user's location defined in XBMC. So if the location was "Australia" then Australian ratings would be used, if it was Germany, German ratings etc.

And where do we get said localized ratings from exactly?

IMDB has them, Media Info Plus has the ability to grab these ratings. For example: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/ scroll down under "Additional Details" it's listed as "Certification"

No worries... I'll do that. By the way I didn't mean completely replace MPAA ratings, did mean both... Wink

Edit: trac ticket http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/6589

Hey guys,

I know you are looking into revamping the database in the future, and I have a suggestion related to that.

I would like it if the MPAA field was removed and replaced with a "localized" rating. So for people in the UK we could have the BFCC, the French could get their Ministry of Culture rating and the Germans get the FSK rating (etc etc).

The information is available via IMDB.com so I imagine it could be picked up by the standard IMDB scrapper (so shouldn't need to use localized scrappers).

The location could be set via the user or picked up via ip (if you want to be clever about it).

Edit: thanks to the Mod who moved this, I obviously didn't search very well.

Just to add, the international ratings have moved since the IMDB layout change.

In the "Motion Picture Rating" section of the page there is a link: See all certifications (using inception as an example).

themoviedb.org has these as well.

Did anything come of this? I'm finding a lot of my movies don't have an MPAA rating when I scrape them with EMM (presumably they wouldn't with XBMC IMDB scraper either) but they all have a UK certificate (I'm in the UK). I really want to be able to filter my movies based on certification for kids and adults.

Want to bump this as I haven't seen any solution to the question.

I migrated from using YAMJ on Popcorn Hour to XBMC and included in every release of YAMJ was a moviejukebox properties file that could be configured and applied to whatever skin you used.

One of the options was to configure the setting for preferred country in iMDB eg. imdb.preferredcountry =

This setting would then display the certification flags for your country when you scraped your movies as all the flags were included by default in every skin. The default value set was always imdb.preferredcountry = USA and used the MPAA certification. But you could select UK for BFCC flags, Australia for OFLC flags and so on.

From memory the properties file, called a templates.xsl file whicn included the code listing the various ratings for supported countries.

If other scrapers are used, I'd hope that a similar setting could be used for themoviedb or rotten tomatoes.

I'd like to think this is a valid request, what does anyone in Team XBMC think?

As an example of the differences that exist between MPAA and the rest of the world for certification ratings: MPAA PG-13 is rated as

Italy:T | Iceland:10 | UK:12 (video rating) | UK:12A (original rating) | Malaysia:U | France:U | Brazil:14 | Argentina:Atp | Australia:M | Canada:14 (Nova Scotia) (original rating) | Canada:G (Quebec) | CanadaTongueG (Alberta/British Columbia/Manitoba/Ontario) | CanadaTongueG (Nova Scotia) (re-rating after appeal) | Chile:TE | Denmark:11 | Finland:K-11 | Germany:12 | Hong Kong:IIA | Hungary:14 | Ireland:12 | Netherlands:12 | New Zealand:M | Norway:11 | PeruTongueT | PhilippinesTongueG-13 | Portugal:M/12 | SingaporeTongueG | South Korea:12 | Spain:7 | Sweden:11 | Switzerland:12 (canton of Geneva) | Switzerland:12 (canton of Vaud) | Switzerland:12 (canton of the Grisons) | USATongueG-13 | Greece:K-13
