Hardware video decoding acceleration

Question
I'm up to build a linux box and I was pondering whether to buy an ATI graphics card.

XBMC page on Wikipedia says only nVidia's VDPAU is supported, but XBMC wiki's page on Hardware Accelerated Video Decoding talks about a lot of different technologies from Intel, ATI, and nVidia.

I'm a bit confused: does Linux version of XBMC support hardware video decoding on ATI cards?

Like you said in your own OP, VDPAU for nvidia is supported.

Yes on linux, vdpau on an nvidia card works very well. There is no support for ati. Go for an nvidia card with at least 512mb of vram. The 9400gt 512mb is recommended.

cheers
