I am the original reporter of 5089 and would be happy to test a linux version for you.

No followup on this? If no developers are interested in adding the patch, I'm kinda thinking about reformatting my ubuntu box to windows for this fix and just never upgrading.

Until a patch is put on trac so that it can be reviewed, there's not a lot to be done.

So all it would take is uploading tiben's patchfile to the trac, then you guys would review it? I tried to apply it to the linux version myself with some guidance from him, but no luck. He's not a linux guy, so it should be an obvious fix for the core devs.
Edit: To be clear, as far as I can tell his fix is pretty much just replacing the version of ffmpeg currently used with another one entirely. The patchfile just makes the rest of xbmc work with it.
WMV functionality is totally broken and has been for over a year, I'm just really surprised that even the boxee guys aren't concerned about that.

I can't speak for all devs but I doubt that we'll use this patch. As pointed out it just replaces ffmpeg with a newer svn snapshot and comments some lines in XBMC code which isn't really the way we fix things.
However this effort may lead us in the right direction and if you post a ticket on trac we can assign it to people who might wanna have a look at it.
